This is the scythe I use. It is a Tyzack patent blade type scythe and would have been the most common in this area, but with a wooden shaft and wooden handles.

I have added two extra nibs.
This makes my scythe two speed.
The plastic nibs is the high speed and the wooden nibs the low speed.
When I have only heavy awkward grass to cut I turn the plastic handles forward and just use the wooden nibs.
When i have a lighter crop on even ground I use the plastic handles as positioned in the photograph above.
I think the blade should be covered at all times when not in use. It looks quaint and harmless, which it is not.
